Jaipur fast emerging as a gemstone city

The revival of Jaipur gemstone work has attracted buyers and investments from the western countries. Educational institutes giving light on gemstone work are coming to the city.

Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will soon launch its academic programmes here. GIA managing director, India and Middle East, Nirupa Bhatt, disclosed the plans to set up the institute in Jaipur during her visit to the ongoing Jewellery Association Show (JAS-08).

"We have been holding discussions with local jeweller associations and people concerned regarding academic programmes and have received optimistic results. This October a short-term courses in various streams will be initiated and by next year complete academic courses will be held by our institute" said Niupa Bhatt.

The details of the project have not been disclosed as some decisions are yet to be taken in this regard. "There is a huge potential in the city and we are hopeful that the details of GIA Jaipur will be finalised during our next visit." She added.

The California-based institute has a laboratory and educational organisation in Mumbai and Bangkok also. The Jaipur centre though will not have testing laboratory, but train the gem traders about the benefits of certification. "Certification improves business as it develops more confidence among customers.

There is a huge demands for all kind of colour stones, but the customer must be informed about the product," Bhatt said.
